ANCCE & APSL: the must-have papers

International buyers only pay premium prices for fully documented Iberian horses. The required set:

  1. Breeding certificate (Carta de Origen): ANCCE for PRE, APSL for Lusitano. Confirms purebred status and entry in the Stud Book.
  2. Equine passport with UELN: 15-digit Unique Equine Life Number, EU-compliant.
  3. Ownership certificate (Cartilla de Propiedad): Updated to show you as the current seller.
  4. Brand documentation: Registry brand on the left hindquarter is standard for PREs.
  5. DNA confirmation: Required for stallion approval and international recognition.

Also read our pre-purchase exam guide — for buyers in the UK, Ireland and the US, a vetting report in English with full radiograph notes is now the standard expectation.

Retrospective ANCCE registration

Adult horses can also be entered into the ANCCE Stud Book after the fact, provided the pedigree of both parents is documented (both parents must themselves be ANCCE-registered). 2026 cost: €200–450 (~$220–495 / ~£172–387). Worth doing for any horse with a market value above €5,000.

Top target markets 2026

  • USA (largest volume export market): The Working Equitation scene is growing fast, alongside steady classical dressage and trail demand. PREs and Lusitanos are increasingly visible at USEF shows and WE League events. Portals: horseclicks.com, dreamhorse.com, equinenow.com.
  • UK & Ireland: Rapidly growing Iberian fan base, particularly for Working Equitation and classical dressage. Cobs and warmblood owners are crossing over to PRE/Lusitano. Portals: preloved.co.uk, horsequest.co.uk, horsemart.co.uk, dragondriving.co.uk.
  • Germany (premium market): Doma Clásica and Working Equitation boom since 2023. Highest average sale prices for PRE in Europe. Portals: ehorses.de, pferde.de.
  • Mexico & Argentina: Strong PRE tradition, medium purchasing power, premium prices only for show horses. Portals: animalsale.mx, mascotamigo.
  • France (Lusitano stronghold): Largest Lusitano community outside Portugal. Portals: leboncoin.fr, equirodi.com.
  • Netherlands & Belgium: Growing hobby market. Mid-range prices, fast turnover.
  • Russia & Eastern Europe: Growing market for show and dressage PREs. Portal: equestrian.ru.

Which discipline gets the best price?

  1. Doma Clásica: The most valuable discipline for PREs and Lusitanos. Movements such as piaffe, passage, Spanish walk and levade can double a horse's value.
  2. Working Equitation (WE): Booming in the USA, UK, Germany and France. Horses with proven WE experience command a 20–30% price premium — and the US WE League is now one of the fastest-growing equestrian disciplines on the continent.
  3. Classical / FEI dressage: Horses schooled to recognised dressage standards open up the German-speaking, UK and US markets at the top end. "Classically schooled" is a genuine selling point.
  4. Leisure / trail: Bombproof, easy to shoe, suitable for amateurs. Quick sale, mid-range price bracket.
  5. In-hand show & exhibition: Cobra mares, Spanish Walk demonstrations, riding school horses. Niche market with high premium prices.

Export & international transport from Spain/Portugal

Frequently asked questions about selling PREs & Lusitanos

What is the difference between a PRE and a Lusitano?

PRE = Spain (ANCCE-registered), Lusitano = Portugal (APSL-registered). PREs are more compact; Lusitanos leaner with a longer back. Both are top performers in Doma Clásica.

How much is a PRE worth in 2026?

Young, lightly backed PRE €8,000–18,000, Elementary level €18,000–35,000, Doma Clásica professional €50,000–100,000, approved stallion €80,000–200,000+.

Do I need ANCCE papers to sell?

Yes — without them prices drop 30–50%. Retrospective registration costs €200–450.

Which countries are best for selling?

USA/DE/UK/MX for PREs, FR/USA/BR for Lusitanos. Marketing across 4–5 countries is now standard.
